A group of sea adventurers sailed out to sea in search of new lands. From Little Explorers, the children participating in the third edition of Children For Children became Sea Explorers as they celebrate Children’s Day at the Underwater World Singapore. It was a record when more than 1,000 pupils from 73 primary schools island wide participated that year. Joining the Sea Explorers at Underwater World Singapore was Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Mr Lui Tuck Yew.
The 5th edition of ChildAid showcased 274 performers aged from 4 to 19 years. A total of 15 acts will take to the stage – including seven youths from Malaysia and Indonesia, chosen from 550 acts following July and August auditions held in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. This year’s concert raised a record $1 million to help needy children, double last year’s fund-raising total of $506,000.
Singapore Press Holdings’ youth charity concert ChildAid has raised a record $1 million to help needy children. The money raised will support two charities – The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund.
Strong corporate support and brisk ticket sales boosted this year’s tally to $1,015,000 – double last year’s fund-raising total of $506,000. The concert’s takings crossed the $1-million mark after Citibank and PriceWaterhouse Coopers pledged $100,000 and $30,000 respectively yesterday.
This year’s concert will be held at Resorts World Sentosa from Dec 19-21. It will be the first event to be held at the integrated resort, which is the venue and production partner for the concert.
Tickets for the concert sold out last week.
On 30 September, The Business Times, CHIJ (Kellock) and The Arts House came together, for the second year running to create a fun-filled community event called Children for Children, in aid of ChildAid, an annual fundraising concert where proceeds will go towards The Business Times Budding Artists Fund and The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund. The second edition of Children For Children adopted a bold and fearless safari theme – Into The Wild. It was a perfect name as the event was held at the iconic Singapore Zoo. About 1,000 children took on the role of Little Explorer and were given a treasure-hunt map. The children were from various primary schools and non-profit organizations from across the island. They were paired with staff from The Business Times, Pico Art International Pte Ltd, Rabobank International and WBL Corporation Limited. The event was also graced by Mr Sam Tan, the Parliamentary Secretary of Ministry of Trade & Industry and Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts.
This year’s ChildAid featured 80 performers aged 6-19 as well as two international talents – 12-year-old Hong Kong pianist Aristo Sham, the 2007 HK Young Artist Award winner, and 10-year-old Tiger Onitsuka from Japan. Tiger is the world’s youngest professional drummer. $506,000 was raised for the two charities.

Thanks to strong corporate support and healthy public ticket sales, the collection for the two-night concert surpassed last year´s sum of $450,000 (The list of sponsors are listed below.). This brings the total amount raised since the inaugural concert in 2005 past the $1.5 million mark.
“This proves that despite the challenging economic climate, the Singapore public and corporate sector have big hearts. It signals to the needy children that our society cares for them,” said Mr Peter Khoo, ChildAid’s organising chairman. “We are truly grateful to everyone for their tremendous support.’’
The inaugural Children For Children was held at the tallest Ferris Wheel in the world, Singapore’s very own Singapore Flyer. The flyer had only been opened for less than a year when more than 1038 young children came bustling to celebrate Children’s Day. The children hailed from over 20 different organizations such as Canossaville Children’s Home, Student Advisory Centre, CARE Singapore and As-Saalam YWMA Family Support centre. They were grouped with pupils from CHIJ (Kellock) who were their minders for the day. More than 100 children will come together to create a fun-filled Children’s Day for 1,000 children from low-income families at a fundraising-cum-community event called Children for Children @ Singapore Flyer today! The event will be graced by Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts.
Organised in aid of ChildAid which supports two charities for needy children in Singapore, mainly the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund, Children for Children has raised the targeted S$200,000 within just three weeks through donations from organisations such as Overseas Union Enterprise, CapitaLand Hope Foundation and United Overseas Bank, as well as individual company executives.
ChildAid, the annual children´s charity concert has raised a record $450,000 for the two charities, bringing the total amount raised since the inaugural concert in 2005 passed the $1 million mark. Thanks to strong corporate support and healthy public ticket sales, the collection for the two-night concert, has surpassed last year´s $390,000. The first ChildAid concert in 2005 raised $330,000. This year´s concert featured a Family Segment and notable performers include 16-year-old Bertand Peh and his grandmother, Madam Mary Ho, 71, who will be playing on electric guitars, and talented siblings Jonathan and Angela Lim who will perform a piano duet.
