Children For Children at Singapore Flyer

More than 100 children will come together to create a fun-filled Children’s Day for 1,000 children from low-income families at a fundraising-cum-community event called Children for Children @ Singapore Flyer today! The event will be graced by Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts.

Organised in aid of ChildAid which supports two charities for needy children in Singapore, mainly the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund, Children for Children has raised the targeted S$200,000 within just three weeks through donations from organisations such as Overseas Union Enterprise, CapitaLand Hope Foundation and United Overseas Bank, as well as individual company executives.

For the 1,000 children from about 25 non-profit organisations, the highlight of the afternoon will surely be a ride on the Singapore Flyer. The children will also get to participate in arts activities booths at the Greek Theatre and watch a concert comprising an original production by primary school students from CHIJ Kellock. In addition, there will also be a performance by talented children who had performed at previous ChildAid concerts. All the children will also join in a participatory mass dance session.

To date, the event, which is jointly organised by a newspaper, The Business Times, a primary school CHIJ (Kellock), and an arts organisation, The Arts House, has already involved 1,200 students and staff from CHIJ (Kellock) who have donated stationery for the goodie bags that will be given out to the needy children on that day.

The 1,000 children benefiting from the event come from over 20 non-profit organisations including voluntary welfare organisations such as the Canoossaville Children’s Home, Student Advisory Centre, CARE Singapore and As-Saalam YWMA Family Support centre, opportunity fund students from primary schools and after-school centres.

Said Mr Colin Goh, General Manager of the The Old Parliament House Ltd which manages The Business Times Budding Artists Fund: “We are thankful for the generous response from the various corporations and the community within this short period of time. We are also grateful for the warmth and strong dedication which the students and staff of CHIJ (Kellock) have demonstrated to create this event for their young friends who are less fortunate than themselves. The support Children for Children has received is a demonstration of the Singapore society’s concern and care for our children, regardless of circumstances. This event is indeed symbolic of how segments of our society, especially our young can come together for their needy counterparts when it matters and this is indeed a hopeful sign for the future.”

The Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BT-BAF)

Initiated by The Arts House and adopted by The Business Times in May 2005, BT-BAF aims to enable underprivileged children between the ages of five to 12 years to pursue an arts education in the development of their interests and knowledge in music, dance, drama, and visual arts. The Fund originated from a strong conviction that no child who possesses artistic potential should be deprived of the opportunity to develop his or her talents in the arts due to socio-economic circumstances. BT-BAF is managed by The Old Parliament House Limited, a not-for-profit full-service arts management company limited by guarantee. For further information, please visit www.baf.sg.
